IHADS has trained eight Hygiene Promoters to support hygiene awareness and household-level WASH activities among displacement-affected communities in Kahda District, Banadir.

Building Practical Hygiene Promotion Skills

IHADS conducted a two-day Hygiene Promotion Training on 2–3 September 2026 for eight selected Hygiene Promoters who will support hygiene awareness and household-level activities in targeted IDP settlements in Kahda District, Banadir.

The training was conducted under the Integrated Humanitarian Response and Area-Based Coordination for Displacement-Affected Communities in Somalia project.

2 Days of Practical Training

The training covered key hygiene and sanitation topics, including:

  • Personal and household hygiene
  • Handwashing and critical handwashing times
  • Safe water handling and storage
  • Proper use of latrines
  • Safe disposal of household waste
  • Prevention of diarrhoeal diseases
  • Simple and effective hygiene communication

Learning Through Participation

The training was highly interactive and practical. Participants took part in brainstorming, group work, contextual discussions and practical exercises, allowing them to relate the training to the hygiene and sanitation challenges faced in their communities.

By the end of the training, all eight participants demonstrated a good understanding of the key hygiene messages and the practical approach to conducting household sessions.

Preparing for Field Activities

The Hygiene Promoters were also introduced to key project tools, including the Hygiene Promotion Master Plan, Hygiene Promotion Session Plan and WASH Baseline Survey using KoboToolbox.

Practical guidance was provided on conducting household sessions, asking survey questions, recording responses and submitting data correctly.

From Training to Action

The training has prepared the eight Hygiene Promoters to begin supporting hygiene promotion and household-level activities in the targeted settlements.

The participants appreciated the interactive and practical approach and highlighted the value of the knowledge and skills gained for their upcoming community activities.

IHADS remains committed to supporting practical WASH interventions that promote healthier hygiene practices among displacement-affected communities in Somalia.
